What The Role Is

About URBEX and DPLab

Over the years, URA has spearheaded efforts to strengthen urban planning and design workflows through the application of urban science, geospatial and data analytics, modelling and simulation (M&S), and AI technologies. In 2022, URA was designated as the Whole-of-Government (WOG) Urban Planning & Design Technology Centre of Excellence (URBEX), to lead the planning and design sector in building up these strategic capabilities.

The Design & Planning Lab (DPLab) is a multi-disciplinary team in URA which drives URBEX efforts. In recognition of our work, URA was conferred the 2024 Esri Special Achievement in Geographic Information System (GIS) Award for demonstrating vision, leadership and innovation in the use of GIS technology. URA was also awarded the Esri Singapore GeoInnovation Award in 2024 for being amongst Singapore’s most progressive organisations in the use of geospatial solutions to transform the future. Our flagship product, ePlanner (a web-based geospatial platform that brings digital planning tools to WOG) also won the Excellence Award at the Singapore Public Service’s Science, Technology and Engineering Conference 2024.

In DPLab, you will work alongside talented individuals with expertise in wide-ranging domains including data policy, governance, strategy and engineering, product strategy, business analysis, software engineering, cloud engineering, urban design technologies, data science, AI/Machine Learning, and M&S. You will also work closely with planners, architects, and policymakers to co-create digital solutions that contribute to enhancing the liveability, sustainability and resilience of our city-state.

What You Will Be Working On

• Develop web-based solutions by working collaboratively with internal user groups (AI Engineers, Data Engineers, UX Designers, Product Managers, etc.) and WOG agencies in the scoping, architecting, development, deployment and integration of user-facing AI applications using cloud or on-premise infrastructure
• Design and develop intuitive and robust user interfaces that seamlessly integrate with AI backend services
• Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code across frontend layers with proper integration patterns
• Contribute to technical design discussions, architecture reviews, and engineering best practices
• Take ownership of features from conception through deployment and ongoing maintenance
• Assess the technical feasibility of proposed user interface features, estimate resource requirements, and identify potential risks or challenges to make informed decisions about how to prioritise development efforts
• Responsible for monitoring, troubleshooting and optimising the performance of web applications, including identifying bottlenecks, implementing efficiency improvements, and ensuring that systems can handle production workloads effectively whilst maintaining acceptable response times and resource utilisation
• Coordinate with the cloud team on solution infrastructure and deployment requirements, ensuring applications are properly deployed and integrated with backend AI service
• Engage stakeholders across departments and external agencies to gather use cases and requirements, document user feedback, and support solution roll-outs with feedback loops
  
  

What We Are Looking For

Knowledge

• Proficiency in TypeScript/React for robust frontend development and type safety
• Understanding of Npm/Vite for application build tooling and package management
• Knowledge of cloud infrastructure and services for web application deployment (Microsoft Azure/AWS)
• Familiarity with implementing RESTful API patterns for backend integration, including databases and blob storage
• Understanding of AI/ML application interfaces and user experience considerations for AI-powered applications
• Knowledge of Next.js framework and Vercel AI SDK
• Understanding of accessibility standards and government digital service guidelines
• Knowledge of government systems, enterprise applications, or regulated environments
  
  Skills
• At least 2 years of relevant experience in frontend development, full-stack development, or related roles
• Ability to architect web-based solutions that are effective, reliable, secure, scalable, and cost-efficient
• Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities
• Excellent communication skills for engaging with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional and interdisciplinary teams with AI engineers and cloud infrastructure teams
• Experience working in government systems, enterprise applications, or regulated environments
• Proficiency in implementing user-friendly interfaces for AI-powered applications
