3 Government Teams to Catch at NUS Computing Career Fair

The NUS School of Computing (SoC) is holding their annual career fair on 29th and 30th August, attracting 59 employers from a range of industries, offering full-time and internship positions to university students. This includes 13 Government Agencies, looking for people to build tech for public good.

Amongst the more familiar names in public sector technology, the Digital and Intelligence Service, the Government Technology Agency and Open Government Products will be in attendance.

There are also other agencies that may also offer an enriching career for graduates in Computer Science and related majors, which we have covered in greater detail below.

1. Centre for Strategic Infocomm Technologies (CSIT)

The Centre for Strategic Infocomm Technologies (CSIT) is a technical agency in the Ministry of Defence that harnesses cutting-edge digital technologies to meet Singapore’s security needs. It develops capabilities to support missions such as cyber defence, counter terrorism, and counter hostile information operations, and provides threat intelligence to support national security.

The agency also maintains a Medium blog, where they post occasionally on cybersecurity and software engineering.

CSIT will be at the Computing Career Fair on both 29th and 30th August.

2. Housing Development Board (HDB)

With about 80% of Singapore’s resident population calling HDB flats homes, Singapore’s public housing programme forms the core of our nation’s homes. HDB residents interact with the e-services offered through HDB InfoWEB, the agency’s public website.

HDB estates are green and smart, with secure IoT infrastructure underpinning key smart initiatives such as smart lighting and lift performance monitoring, to create a better living environment for residents.

HDB harnesses Augmented Reality applications which help residents visualise how parts of their home could look like after upgrading.

Video analytics as part of Parking@HDB (no relation to the Parking.sg app) makes parking more seamless with automated payments, and without the need for entry/ exit barriers.

The agency also has a team utilising machine learning and innovative analytics to help the organisation provide targeted and personalised services to its residents.

HDB will be at the Computing Career Fair only on 29th August.

3. Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS)

As the Singapore Government's principal revenue collection body, IRAS collects various forms of taxation, including Income Tax and Goods and Services Tax (GST).

They are responsible for:

  • myTax Portal, which many Singaporeans would use to file their tax returns
  • IRIN (Inland Revenue Interactive Network), the core system that underpins IRAS’ administration and its operations, including running myTax Portal. Its third iteration is currently under development.
  • IRAS API Marketplace, which allows other applications to interact with IRAS for taxation matters.

IRAS also has a Digital Partnership Team, which acts as the first point of contact for the software developer community and the agency, and helps the addition of Singapore tax filing in payroll and accounting software packages.

IRAS will be at the Computing Career Fair only on 30th August.
