The Software Development Centre is responsible for the development of software and application products to harness technology to improve the performance of our clients value chain. The team is made up of subject matter experts that work to the country manager to develop products that assist in the delivery of the client mandate. Working together but often independently, each developer will be expected to work, onsite and remotely, with the wider team and clients on complex engagements.

The Role

The Software Development Centre (SDC) data engineer reports to the country manager and is responsible for the development and maintenance of data processing software and applications improving data reliability and quality. As the data engineer you will be required to coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to combine raw information from multiple sources and create unique data infrastructure, run tests on the designs to isolate errors and update systems to accommodate changes in client needs. You will be critical to the development of test architectures that enable data extraction and transformation for predictive or prescriptive modeling.

Responsibilities

The primary duties of the data engineer are:

• Lead the Data Engineering aspects of design and development of SDC’s product and platform development, including specifying data pipelines for multiple sources, formats, and frequencies (e.g. streaming, batched, API, unstructured, etc).
• Work closely with product owners, infrastructure engineers, data scientists, front end engineers and UI/UX consultants to create coherent, robust and sustainable outputs.
• Analysis and organisation of raw data to build data systems and pipelines.
• Interpret trends and patterns.
• Conduct complex data analysis and report on results.
• Prepare data for prescriptive and predictive modeling.
• Build algorithms and prototypes.
• Collaborate with data scientists and architects on several projectsWork with client and internal stakeholders to understand their business problem, technology, digital maturity, data sources, access protocols and secturity requirements to ensure the highest levels of data security.
• Contribute to project plans, designs and prototype solutions to demonstrate early benefit and value.
• Contribute to discussions and discovery workshops to understand the As-Is state and any existing digital change activity already underway.
• Work in an Agile manner, collaborating closely with clients and colleagues to iteratively refine and deliver the solution within the Discovery – Alpha – Beta – Live delivery model aligned to GDS standards.
• Engage with appropriate Agile ceremonies, ensuring necessary information (e.g. progress, releases, risks, issues) is shared with the product owner, project manager and other stakeholders.
• Work effectively in diverse teams within an inclusive team culture where people are recognised for their contribution.
• Lead, coach and mentor team members.
  
  

Secondary Duties Of The Data Engineer Are

• Commit to continuous development by supporting the organisation of team events, training sessions and recruitment activities.
• Deputise for and carry out other duties as specified by the Country Manager.
  
  

Essential Skills

• Degree in Computer Science, IT, or similar field; a Master’s is a plus.
• Data engineering certification (e.g IBM Certified Data Engineer) is a plus.
• Demonstrable expertise in data engineering, including creating robust data pipelines for streamed, batched and on-demand data sources using Kafka, Delta Lake, PostgreSQL.
• Strong data modelling, analysis, mining and segmentation techniques.
• Knowledge of programming languages (e.g. Java and Python)
• Experience of deploying to Azure cloud and on-premises infrastructure
• Experience of using containerization technology Kubernetes and Docker
• Exceptional problem-solving skills – an analytical, innovative, and creative mindset.
• Experience designing and delivering technology and digital solutions to solve business problems and create enduring value for clients.
• A growth mindset, enthused by challenge and the opportunity for continuous learning.
• Excellent inter-personal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
